Gates in Human Design are all of the different energies that are unique to your birth chart. They originate from the hexagrams of the Chinese I Ching.

Check your birth chart for the whole numbers next to the planetary glyphs. These numbers represent energies that are activated in your chart and are unique to you. There are 64 total Gates, but not everyone will have all of the Gates activated, and everyone’s combination of Gates activated by each planet is unique from everyone else’s.
Gates refer to the 64 individual lines or pathways that make up the BodyGraph. The 64 pathways are derived from the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese I Ching.
Each hexagram represents a specific energy frequency and is associated with different qualities and characteristics.
Each Gate represents a unique energetic theme, archetype, or quality that can be expressed in different ways depending on its location in the BodyGraph, its association with the various planets, and the other Gates it is connected to.
Each of us can only have 26 “activated” Gates (denoted by a filled in circle around the Gate number and living on either side of the BodyGraph, otherwise “open”) which are actually activated by the celestial bodies in your BodyGraph. This is one reason why we needed your birth info 🙂
However, all 64 Gates are represented within the main BodyGraph because other people’s energy and their activated Gates, and your environment can play with your activated Gates. (See our Channels section for more info!)
Each Gate has its own unique energy and expression, and understanding how they relate to a person’s body graph can provide insights into their strengths, challenges, and life path.
You may notice a little symbol next to your various Gates, either a triangle or star. This deontes two different spectrums of the same Gate and where you fall on that Gate’s energy spectrum.
- An upwards facing triangle represents the Exaltation end of the Gate’s spectrum or the most elevated sense of that Gate.
- A downward facing triangle represents a place on that Gate’s spectrum that might be something you’ll need to work to overcome in this lifetime.
- An asterisk means you might switch between both ends of that Gate’s spectrum or fall somewhere in between them.
